First Impressions – To Your Eternity

Here are my first impressions of Fumetsu no Anata e (To Your Eternity). It is a brand new anime, adapted from manga of the same name. It follows a higher god-like figure, that creates an immortal being and places it on Earth. Over time it develops sentience and takes on many physical forms, and experiences the world from different perspectives.

Plot Description

In the beginning, an “orb” is cast unto Earth…

“It” can do two things: change into the form of the thing that stimulates “it”; and come back to life after death.

“It” morphs from orb to rock, then to wolf and then to boy. Yet, it roams about like a newborn who knows nothing.

As a boy, “it” becomes Fushi. Through encounters with human kindness, Fushi gains survival skills and grows as a “person”.

His journey is darkened by the inexplicable and destructive enemy “Nokker”. Furthermore, It is plagued with cruel partings from those he loves. – adapted from Crunchyroll

Why did I start watching this anime?

I was initially drawn to To Your Eternity because of the trailer – which I will link below…

The trailer introduces the concept of the story universe through narration, alongside beautiful animation and music. The ‘immortal supernatural’ aspect of the story is very intriguing and I’m excited to see how it plays out.

I get the feeling this show will be an emotional rollercoaster, but I’m not sure I mind! A good story journey is worth it – even if it is painful!

Characters

The trailer introduces us to the narrator which is voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda. He talks about “casting the white orb unto the Earth to observe”. It’s unclear if this narrator is a character we will meet, but his words give the impression he is God-like and important.

There are flashes of a few characters, but it doesn’t give much away – just enough to pique my curiosity. I really like this as sometimes trailers give too much and there ends up being no motivation to watch. It does look feel like there is a lot of emotion in the short clips during the trailer.

I’m loving the dog character and his relationship with the boy that seems to be the main character. I have a lot of curiosity about the hooded character that we see – perhaps this is an enemy?

I can tell I’m already going to cry over these two!
I’m really curious to know who this character is!

Opening and Ending Sequences

The opening sequence is a song called ‘Pink Blood’ by Hikaru Utada. The video gives a lot away, so if you are planning to watch the show unspoiled, proceed with caution!

It has a somber feeling and makes no attempt to hide the kinds of emotions the show will bring. I feel that the opening and ending songs are reflective of the mood. It’s really something that this is starting off with such a sad feeling.

The ending song has no vocals and is an instrumental with imagery. It is called ‘Mediator‘ and was created by Masashi Hamauzu. Just like the introduction song, this has an emotional feeling! The following video contains spoilers, so proceed with caution.

Final Thoughts

I am super looking forward to watching To Your Eternity, if the aesthetic of the trailer is anything to go by, I think the show will be very pretty and hold its own from a visual standpoint alone.

I’m not sure I am entirely ready for how potentially emotional this will be, but I think it will make a nice change to watch something unpredictable and unapologetic about its storytelling.
